Prospect Watch: On a bullpen day on the road in Round Rock, five Chihuahuas relievers delivered, holding the Express to only four hits. Offensively, Yonathan Perlaza, 26, connected on a three-run blast for his sixth home run of the season as part of a two-hit game. After posting a sub-600 OPS for May, the switch-hitter has bounced back to get his OPS up to .811 on the year. That’s still well below his .922 mark with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs in 2023 or the .850 he managed while hitting 24 home runs in Korea last year. Defensively he has spent most of his time in right field for the Chihuahuas. … After striking out in the first and getting hit by a pitch, Jason Heyward lined a 103 mph single to right in the fifth inning. He finished his day with a grounder and a second punchout in the ninth. Heyward has appeared as the designated hitter in his first two rehab assignment starts. … Outfielder Forrest Wall had a pair of hits including a double. The 29-year-old minor league free agent signee has a .714 OPS on the year. … After a rough stretch in which he gave up 10 earned runs over 5.1 innings, Francis Peña seems to have righted the ship. The wiry reliever tossed two scoreless innings in his third straight multi-inning appearance. Peña punched out two and walked one while pumping both his sinker and four-seam fastball up to 97 mph. … El Paso will go for the split on Sunday.

Prospect Watch: Until the seventh inning, fans in the Texas Panhandle witnessed a rare pitchers’ duel at Hodgetown, one of the best hitting environments in baseball. Henry Baez mixed and matched his pitches to throw six shutout innings, allowing five hits without a walk while striking out three. While other members of the staff have gotten more attention, Baez leads the team with 64.1 innings pitched and a 2.24 ERA that ranks third in the Texas League. The 22-year-old righty has allowed just three earned runs over his last five starts. … Reliever Andrew Moore came on in relief, but took a line drive off his right arm and left the game after just one pitch. Jared Kollar, making his first appearance since being sent down from El Paso, gave up a pair of walks and two doubles to give the home team the lead. … San Antonio tied it back up when Ripken Reyes laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score pinch-runner Wyatt Hoffman, but the Sod Poodles won on a walk-off throwing error from third base by Hoffman. … After the loss, the Missions are 1.5 games behind the Frisco RoughRiders for the first-half title in the Texas League South with seven games left.

Prospect Watch: After winning last week’s series on the road in Beloit, Fort Wayne has dropped five straight to the cellar-dwelling Cubs. The TinCaps offense has scored two over the last four games. … In our interview with him, Isaiah Lowe told us that starting strong in the first inning was key to his success. He did just that in game one Saturday on his way to one of his best outings of the year in the opener. The 22-year-old punched out two while setting down South Bend in order in the first. He went on to allow just one run on two hits over five innings, striking six. The lone run came in when Lowe was called for a balk. The righty continues to struggle with command, landing just 45 of 85 pitches for strikes as he walked three.His walk rate is nearly double what it was in his breakout year with Lake Elsinore in 2024. … Brandon Butterworth tied the game with a full-count, one-out homer in the sixth inning. It was the middle infielder’s third of the year. … Harry Gustin, who hadn’t given up more than one run in his last eight outings, was tagged for two runs in the top of the seventh. The 23-year-old lefty has been one of the TinCaps’ most reliable relievers all year, posting a 2.29 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 39.1 innings of work. … In the nightcap, the TinCaps only managed four hits, two of which were by Jake Snider, who also had two hits in the earlier game. After being put on the Development List when he was batting .188/.305/.29 on May 17, Snider has come back with a vengeance, hitting .379/.471/.448 this month. The Padres selected the 27-year-old outfielder out of the Rockies organization in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft. … Eric Yost took the loss, allowing four earned runs for the second time this month. After allowing 16 runs in 40.3 innings through April and May, The league has caught up a bit this month, putting up nine runs in 15 frames this month.

Prospect Watch: The Storm got out to an early lead on a mammoth home run by Kavares Tears to give Lake Elsinore a 2-0 lead in the second, but the offense was held in check the rest of the way. After posting an .893 OPS in May, Tavares has struggled mightily with a .111 batting average, though he has gotten his strikeout rate back below 30%. He leads the team with home runs and 35 RBIs. … Abraham Parra, 19, had his best and longest outing of the season, giving up just two unearned runs over six innings. The righty was shelled in his first start Cal League start, but has only allowed three earned runs over 16 innings in his last three starts. … After  getting the first two batters he faced after entering in the inning, Adam Conrad gave up a triple followed by three straight walks to make it 3-2. The righty out of the University of Mississippi has struggled with command in his first professional season, giving up 20 free passes over 29 innings, but has held opponents to a .157 average.

Prospect Watch: The game was tied going into the sixth inning before the White Sox put up three runs to take the lead, then put up a 10-spot in the seventh. Won-loss records are the last thing anyone should look at in the Arizona Complex League, but at 9-23, the Padres have the worst winning percentage in the 15-team league. Their 7.47 team ERA is last in the league, while the .704 team OPS is tied for eleventh. … Yimy Tovar, a 19-year-old Venezuelan shortstop, reached base twice to lift his slash line to .304/.349/.400 on the season.  He leads the team with 35 hits is second to Luis De Leon with a .349 on-base percentage. … Righty Alejandro Lugo opened the year in Lake Elsinore, but was sidelined for more than a month. He returned to action in the desert early this month, getting hit hard in three straight outings. The 22-year-old righted the ship a bit Saturday, tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
